Could Propoxur Harm My Cat?
My exterminator comes in each month and sprays my apartment with propoxur. He insists that his chemicals will not harm me or my cat. Should I take him at his word? After reading your article on propoxur in flea collars I am quite concerned.
Gina Solomon responds:
Propoxur is among the most toxic pesticides allowed for home-use applications and has been identified as a probable human carcinogen by EPA. You may want to find a new pest control service provider that will be more responsive to your concerns.
If your service provider is spraying every month, that means the pest control company is not addressing the underlying cause of the pest problem, so the pests will keep coming back. You would get better pest control and a safer home by finding someone who can provide a prevention-based approach, using chemicals only as a last resort. This is called integrated pest management. Check greenshieldcertified.org to learn more about integrated pest management (IPM) and see if there is a certified company in your area.
